The Good American
The Good American Corona 20:20
Shout
prophecies
from pulpits,
soap boxes
sanitizing
crowds...
Scream
caution, into
the privileged distance,
hoarding
lifelines
Baptize
hands in
self-preserving
waters, chanting,
"Life is
fragile.”

Reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic reaching the USA and the irony of Americans simultaneously not taking it seriously enough and yet also worshipping the chaos and prevenative panick — emptying stores of soap, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, canned goods, etc. Complaints over social distancing (to minimize the spread of the virus) are another crazy dichotomy, either from the privileged groups who are simply inconvenienced by isolation, or those whose income will be devastated from skipping work.
As a nation, we despair at the individual inconveniences and threats, but not the societal impact of policies and chosen leadership who fail us. It is mind-boggling. I truly hope that the death toll isnt as high as predicted, but the economic toll surely will be. Lessons learned could create a better country, if we heed them.
