Border Crossing 2019

A fire burns

white hot at the border,

an unfriendly barrier ...

neighbors marking territory.

An upturned lamp,

No longer a welcome

at the Golden door... But, rather

“Trespass at your own risk.”

Some heed the warning,

Feel their brown skin

scorched by rejection.

Others are drawn

to the Torch..

All ages ....of tired and poor

navigating diverse terrain

desperately believing,

“This land is your land.”

Hope suffocated

only by tortured cries from their sacrificed children.

A Father screaming...

“What you do

to the least of them

you do to me.”

———-Inspired by the tragic death of a father/daughter who drowned swimming across the border from Mexico after being held for weeks at a detention center there; results of the “zero tolerance” immigration policy by the Trump Administration. Many inhuman conditions are resulting from that policy.
