Emotional Oxygen (RBG)
Like her
crowned Sister
in the harbor,
she beckoned us
through
the golden door
promising refuge.
Dissenting
against
weaponized
privilege,
Notoriously
protecting
vulnerable
bodies
honorably
demanding,
“Take
your foot
off our
necks!”

*In honor of the incredible life and service of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the Notorious RBG, who fought tirelessly for the disenfranchised citizens of America, particularly in protection of women’s rights.

*Title Credit & Inspiration: The title is a quote from an NPR interview with actress/producer Noomi Rapace about her new movie “The Secrets We Keep”. In discussing the premise and inspiration for the film, and delving into the character’s internal journey, she talks about the human need for healing. In those moments when talking with a friend about childhood secrets (or traumas), that you didnt know you wanted to talk about... “And as soon as you let a little bit of daylight in, a little bit of emotional oxygen into those hidden places, I think it's the first step to heal and to deal with them.”
This resonated on many levels, as I mourned the passing of RBG. She was our emotional oxygen, saying and doing what was needed to heal us and deal with the woundings of inequality in our lives. This inspired the poem.
