Jada Pinkett Inspiring Mom Moment

I started this blog to flex my twitchy feminist muscles. Many things in this society scream gender inequality, and since this not only breaks my heart, but causes fits of outrage, I use this blog as a place to constructively vent those observations. Unfortunately I fear it will be many generations before that is no longer true of our society.  Thus, this sight will no doubt get lots of use for that purpose.  However, there are always positive stories to be found as well.

And so I start this blog post with a HUGE praise for the lovely, and powerful, Jada Pinkett Smith.  Back in November, when her daughter was getting flack from the media for her choice in hair style (she shaved it off), this great mom spoke out in support of her daughter, saying it was not her hair choice that defines her.  It is but one very small aspect, a decision that was solely HERS to make.  Jada has empowered her daughter not only by allowing her to be whomever she wants to be, but for speaking out against anyone who tries to stifle her.  It is an absolutely inspiring mother-daughter moment; one that hasn't received enough attention (in my mind).  Public comment brought on by daughter's recent decision to shave her hair off.)  Read more

Two other inspiring moms, are right here in my local Florida community. They are living feminism by working hard to pursue their dreams of owning a successful business, not letting barriers stand in their way.  These driven women will undoubtedly succeed in growing their brands, because their determination and heart shows in their work.  They are the perfect role model for their children.  You have to check out these female owned start-up companies!

+Sandra Meza is a young mother who recently launched her own swimwear line in Gainesville, FL.  She studied design in her home country of Columbia and started a clothing brand with her best friend.  But, when she relocated with her family to Florida, things had to change.  Being the entrepreneur she is, Sandra revamped the brand, targeting the swimsuit market (for Floridians). Sironna Swimwear was born, and has since been twice featured in Gainesville Fashion Week. Despite the challenges of starting over in a new country, in a new language, she is making her dreams manifest! Her suits are creating quite the buzz with their fibrant, colorful Colombian fabrics (which she imports - her partner/best friend is the purchaser for the company, in Colombia!) and unique, hand-sewn details done by Sandra herself.  They are truly one of a kind pieces. She released a kids swimwear line recently and hopes to start a mother-daughter line soon. Check out her website or facebook page to see her latest suits and to learn more about this inspiring woman.

+Angela Mobley is a young, single mom who works full time for a medical non-profit while launching her oh so delicious candy & confections catering business, Tasty Oasis.   She is one determined woman!  Working out of her home on weekends, she bakes and creates Tasty Oasis wares for local business events, bridal & baby showers, holiday parties, birthdays, and any other occasion her customers may request.  From mini cupcakes, pie pops, cookies and chocolates, her creations are truly scrumptious.  Try this "sweet refuge."
